The dogs are “in heat” when they enter the fertile period of their reproductive cycle. The heat lasts about three weeks and a dog usually come into heat every 6-8 months.

In most races the first mating season takes place at about 6 months old, but may occur earlier or later.

Usually can be identified by mild bleeding from the vagina, vulva, swollen or increased urination. However, the bleeding in dogs is not too strong and a small dog may even go unnoticed.

Unwanted attention

The first thing you notice if your dog comes into heat is that it appeals to non-castrated males in a large radio. Its behavior also changes so if you do not normally leave the males to mount, being in heat almost certainly allows it.

In addition, males are able to go to extremes to meet striking a female in heat. While your dog in heat is not recommended to leave it unattended and must carry it with the belt every time you take a walk. In general the owners of other dogs with whom they can control crossing their dogs, but the smell of a female in heat can cause aggressive behavior in some dogs.

Hemorrhage

The second concern is bleeding. If your dog loses enough blood to soil, you may want to limit it to areas with bare floors easy to clean.

Except in cases in which you want to engage in farming, it is best to sterilize. Prevent sterilization in heat.

There is some controversy about the best age to spay your dog. Some veterinarians recommend leaving the dog which has a mating season, however, other neutralization practice at 6 months. Ask your veterinarian which measures seem right for your dog.
